Wendron Church is sited two miles north of Helston, on the Helston-Redruth road.  Its geographical area is one of the largest in Cornwall, including the communities of Burras in the north, Crelly in the west, Carnkie in the east and Trewennack and the road from Trewennack to Gweek in the south.  The church was built in approximately 1150, and for most of the 850 years since it has enjoyed very close links with Helston which was originally carved out of its parish.

Mining has been a significant factor of Wendron’s life, and caused a church to be built at Porkellis in the Victoria era (now Porkellis Village Hall).  The decline in the mining led to a significant migration to the New World from Wendron parish.  Agriculture now pre-dominates:  there are some 80 farmhouses in the parish, many of which would originally have had farms of about 50 acres.

News from Wendron Parish

As you know, we are supporting four different charities throughout the year, so it was great to be able to send a total of £176 to the Leprosy Mission for the first quarter. We are focusing on Mission Mondova. As always, the church looked lovely for the Easter festival. Rev Harry Chant conducted an inspiring service to a full congregation, & chocolate eggs were distributed by kind donation of Joy Whawell. On Low Sunday morning we had a service of the Word led by our Reader in training, Gillian Bowles, which was followed in the evening by our Songs of Praise. It was lovely to welcome so many from St Michael's. The singing was enthusiastic, & refreshments were enjoyed by all. We also received support from several Moldova Mission members, & raised £50 for them towards our quarterly donation. Church funds were also swelled by £51

On the following Sunday Anne Veneear & myself joined a band of hardy souls from St Michael's to travel to the Eden Project to say farewell to Bishop Bill. It was a special occasion, not to have been missed, but it did take several hours to thaw out when we returned. I recently attended the "Thank You " cream tea held by the Mothers Union at the Andrew hall, for those who have supported the Moldova Mission. Jean came along to talk to us, then the Treasurer showed two very interesting videos, & answered questions. I'm sure it has inspired us once again to look out for possible items that we can donate.

At the Annual Parish Meeting on 28th April, the Church Wardens, officers and members of the PCC were re-elected en bloc. We were pleased to welcome an additional member, Philip Warren to the PCC. The Rev.David took the opportunity in his report to thank the many people who enable Wendron church to continue to offer a welcoming place of worship & to reach out into the community with a variety of activities which have taken place during the past year. Special mention was made of the support given by the St Michael's Bell Ringers, which enable the bells to be rung twice a month & at special services. It has been decided that a plaque will be erected inside the church to commemorate the wonderful record of service performed in this church by the late Joe James. It was also decided to purchase new altar linen and pew mats.

Mr Richard Lawrence, Head of Wendron School, has agreed to hold a non-uniform day at the school to raise funds for Christian Aid & to raise awareness of the charity's work. He has also kindly agreed to allow us to have several stalls at their next school fete, to raise funds for the church. We were originally planning a fete in July, but instead of this the joint School/Church fete will now be held in the late autumn There will, however, be a Silent Auction running during August, up until the Cream Tea Sunday on 25th. If anyone has anything suitable to donate for this purpose please contact me & I will store it for you.

Looking well ahead now, Wendron Party will be held at the home of Joy Whawell, Sunny Corner Cottage, Gweek on Friday 28th November at 7.30p.m. There will be a raffle for Children's Hospice South West. We have also been offered once again a large turkey to raffle by Mr Courtauld of Vicarage Farm. We hope to start selling tickets for this a little earlier this year.

Best wishes to all for a sunny Summer.

Vee Green.
