St Martin is one of the four parishes bordering the southern bank of the Helford River. This peaceful and sheltered part of the Lizard Peninsula, a designated area of natural beauty, hides secret coves and sandy bays along the river bank, accessible by woodland walks or by boat. The parish of St Martin consists of three hamlets, St Martin Green, Newtown in St Martin, and Tregidden together with a number of ancient scattered farms. Its population was at its peak in 1841 (565) falling to 242 in 1961 but steadily increasing to 308 in 1991.   St Martin Green has the church, the school, the parish hall and the post office, Newtown has the garage and the Prince of Wales Inn. . Within the parish are two pre-historic earthworks. Gear Camp enclosing an area of about 15acres and Caervallack Camp. Both these sites were featured in a Time Team TV programme broadcast in January 2002.
