The parish of St. Keverne is one of the largest in Cornwall, stretching from the north side of Kennack Sands to Penare Head and taking in Goonhilly Downs and Traboe en route. Its main centres of population are St. Keverne village (c1000) and Coverack (c300) and Porthallow (c100). St. Keverne, a Celtic evangelist from around 600AD came either from Ireland or France, his name may have been Kevran, Kieran or even Piran. The present church was built around the 11th century but there was almost certainly an earlier one on the same site.   The church enjoys very close links with the Methodist churches at St.Keverne and Ponsongath , a hamlet above Coverack. The parish attracts a lot of summer visitors, particularly divers and campers. The parish has been recently nationally known through its award-winning brass band. It also boasts a male voice choir, a regular pantomime and many artists. The church in St. Keverne is at the heart of the village and its varied worship diet reflects its desire to reach everyone. Coverack church was built in 1885. A notable vicar of the past was Canon Diggens, vicar at the time of the SS Mohegan tragedy in 1898. Through his influence the rocket distress apparatus, invented by Henry Trengrouse of Helston,  was first introduced for shipping.
