Manaccan is one of the four parishes bordering the southern bank of the Helford River. This peaceful and sheltered part of the Lizard Peninsula, a designated area of natural beauty, hides secret coves and sandy bays along the river bank, accessible by woodland walks or by boat. In the 1800s Manaccan Parish consisted of the hamlets of Helford, High Lanes, Churchtown and Carne with several isolated farms. Today Helford and Manaccan Churchtown have grown into small villages each with its own shop and Post Office, and village pub. The Church and School are in Manaccan and the Methodist Chapel is at High Lanes which lies between the two villages. The parish attracts its share of summer visitors, particularly walkers and boating people. The number of small farms has been greatly reduced and much of the land is now being used for the growing of spring flowers, many of which are exported to America. Helford is a picturesque village of quaint cottages nestling round the creek. A useful public car park a short walk above the village allows visitors to amble down to the village or to take the circular walk to Frenchman’s Creek.
Manaccan church, built in the 12th century, is famous for the ancient fig tree growing out of its walls. One of its past vicars was the notable Cornish Historian, Richard Polwhele, whose friend William Gregor isolated, from the black sands of the Durra stream in the south of the Parish, the ore of the important metal Titanium. Today’s congregation shares its Rector, The Rev'd Lesley Walker, with three other parishes and extends a warm welcome to visitors to its Church and in particular to its weekly Sunday Family Eucharist at 11.15 am.
