Welcome to the most
southerly parish in Cornwall and in mainland Britain, the parish of
Landewednack. The parish derived its name from the village of Landevennec in
Brittany and includes the village of The Lizard and the hamlet of Churchtown
that is the ancient centre of Landewednack.
The parish is almost an island as it is surrounded on three sides by the sea
and rocky cliffs on which many ships have foundered. The most southerly
Lifeboat and the most southerly Lighthouse are here. The cliff scenery is
magnificent with rugged coves cut into them and with fascinating names like
Kynance Cove and Caerthillian Cove.
The parish church of St.Wynwallow is thought to have been founded by an
evangelist monk named Guenole during the 6th Century (although nothing
remains of the original building) as a daughter church of the abbey of
Landevennec. The worship services are varied in a wish to reach all. There
is also a Methodist Church in the parish with which we have good relations.
The Lizard village has a number of shops that cater for tourists and
villagers alike. Parish amenities include amongst others, the Reading Room,
a Church Hall and a School. Most of Cornwall is built on granite, but these
parts are built on Serpentine, which over the years has been used for
building purposes and ornaments.
The parish of Landewednack is a walker's paradise, with the coast path and
the many other paths like spokes of a wheel returning to The Lizard village.
The parish is a haven for migrating birds and recently the Cornish Choughs
have returned.
