Helston is an ancient market town which first received a royal Charter in 1201.  The community existed well before that, and in pre-Norman times was known as Hellys or Henlis – the place of the Old Court – so it was also a legal centre for the surrounding area.

The town is famous for celebrating Furry Day or Flora Day, on or around May 8th, when well over a thousand people dance through the streets of Helston to the music played by Helston Town Band.  Until the 19th century Helston sent two Members to Parliament.

Helston is a vibrant community with strong links with the Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, which is sited on the outskirts of the town.  Helston is also, for many people, the gateway to the Lizard peninsular, serving the needs of many of the visitors who enjoy their holidays in the area throughout the year.  The church reflects the age-spread within the town, and as well as the opportunity to worship together we have many groups and organizations for children and adults – some of which are shared with Wendron Church with which Helston is linked.  Helston has one Secondary School, a Sixth Form College and three Primary Schools – one of which is a church school.
